Cafe Goa – When Goa came to Pune

There are those million times when friends make elaborate plans to go to Goa to chill out and then those dreamy plans are washed out with frothy waves when friends start backing out of the plan. This must have happened to everyone atleast once in their life time. The only consolation during such times is Goan food. The only way to console the brain and treat the taste buds to the flavours of Goa.

So once after our another such abandoned plan, we discovered Cafe Goa. While we didn’t know what to expect, this quaint little place had more to offer than what met the eyes.  This place looked nice and laid back, the Konkani music in the background immediately transported us to Goa. While we couldn’t see the waves or feel the sand at our feet and the salty breeze in our hair, the wafting aromas of the fish fried in coconut oil was enough to give us the Goan feel.

Since we were famished, we ordered a spread. Rawa fry prawns, Rawa fry seer fish,  Rus omelette, Promfret curry, Cafreal Biryani . The fish were fried just right and in coconut oil as Goan homes would do. The portion of seer fish was generous and was tawa fried just right.  The crunchy and crispy texture on the outside and the soft fish on the inside was scrumptious in every way.

The quintessential Goan street food, Rus omelette was just like it had to be. A thick fluffy omelette, happily swimming in a plate of delicious Chicken curry. The Rus omelette is served with Pao, which again was soft and fresh.  While we devoured the Rus Omelette, the main course arrived.  The prawn curry smelled and tasted divine. The quantity was just right for two moderate eaters. The Cafreal biryani was pure unadulterated bliss. The aromas of the fresh cafreal masala as it blended with the rice and chicken took it to a whole new level of sublimity.

By now we were almost full, but no meal is complete without the dessert. We chose the caramel custard which was like the cherry on the cake. The caramel was well done with just the right amount of sweetness for our palates.

Goa Cafe is owned by Aakash, who personally supervises the kitchen and manages the entire show.
